Five Feature Photos

Regie Babb, 51, of Bowling Green, enjoys a cocktail during happy hour at Taqueria Azteca in Bowling Green. Two years ago Babb was stabbed five times, including one wound that blinded his right eye. He says the only thing he remembers of the incident was the smell of his assailant, which he described as a "chemical burn". Because of the smell Babb speculates that he it was an attempted robbery by a crack addict. Today Babb is happy it was not worse. "Can't do nothing about it now, I'm still alive," he said.

Alabama Portrait

Billy Dawkins, 57, of Beauregard, Ala., spends most nights after work sitting outside of Alice Faye's Groceries in Opelika, Ala., as volunteer security. Dawkins started doing this when he noticed intoxicated men frequenting the store when Faye was the only one working, as well as an alarming number of burglaries in the area, he said.

Day at the Race Track

My practicum class went to Keeneland horse racing track in Lexington for a workshop on remote camera set up. It was a long but relaxing day. Here are some photos from it.

Jockey Borsa Fayos moved to the United States from Spain three months ago to compete at Keeneland horse racing track in Lexington, Ky.

A few weeks worth of features

Tar Root, 20, of Karenni, plays takraw on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, a sport popular in Southeast Asia where he lived until 2009 when he and his family came to Bowling Green. Root lives in the Lovers Lane apartment complex where he and his neighbors play takraw almost every day. The residents of the complex are almost all from Burma, Thailand or Karenni and many are refugees.

The truck had a leak in the air tank and all the mechanics in town were too busy so Recinos attempted the repairs himself. He is thankful that he can still play with them despite a four-wheeler accident that left him with several broken ribs a decade ago. After the accident he left the hospital early so that he could go watch his boys play baseball, he said.

100th Post!

100 posts on the blog now. Sorry this is just a couple features and not something more commemorative. I am better than I was 100 posts ago and much worse than I will be 100 posts from now. For reference, here is my first post ever Cheers.

High School Football

I shot high school football for the first time since I was in Flint the other day for Practicum. It was quite the contrast from the Alabama game a week before.

Special Olympics Softball State Championships
